The Adams County Board of Commissioners convened on January 1, 1861, and designated a room at the Courthouse to be used as a recording office. A lease agreement from that meeting still exists today from that date. The first deed recorded by the Recorder’s Office is dated April 26, 1860, by the US Government.
The Adams County Recorder’s Office has been in continuous operation since 1861.
Named After The Sixth President Of The USA
Adams County is named after John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States (1825-1829). It was established by early citizens who sought to establish farmland after the passage of the 1862 Homestead Act by Congress that offered 160 acres of federal land to settlers who could “prove up” the claim by living on and improving the land for 5 years. In 1860, Adams County was formed from portions of the original boundaries around Arapahoe County set in 1855.
Population
Although there was a sharp increase in population with the discovery of gold in the early 1860s, many of these new residents soon left the area, leaving a population of less than 400 by 1870. The arrival of the Denver Pacific Railroad in 1871 brought renewed interest and a period of growth to the region, culminating in Adams’ county’s organization on January 1, 1872, with its seat established at Brighton. By 1910, the county had grown to over 15,000 and it has more than doubled in the century since.
